How To Fix Poor Water Pressure In Your Home

Blog

Water pressure issues can be a significant inconvenience, affecting everything from your morning shower to when you're washing dishes. If you're experiencing poor water pressure in your home, don't fret. There are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix the problem. Here's a guide on how to address this common issue.

1. Check Your Main Shutoff Valve

The first place to look when you notice low water pressure is the main shutoff valve. This valve controls the water supply for your entire home. If it's not fully open, it could be restricting the flow of water. Make sure it's turned counterclockwise as far as it can go. If this doesn't solve your problem, move on to the next step.

2. Inspect the Pressure Regulator

Your home may have a pressure regulator installed. This device, typically located on the line where it enters your home, regulates the water pressure. If it's failing or set incorrectly, it could be causing low water pressure. You may need a plumber to check and possibly replace this device.

3. Clean Faucet Aerators and Showerheads

Over time, mineral deposits can build up in faucet aerators and showerheads, reducing water flow. Unscrew these fixtures and soak them in vinegar overnight to dissolve the buildup. If they're too clogged or worn out, consider replacing them.

4. Check for Leaks

Leaks can also cause low water pressure. Check for damp spots in your yard, which could indicate a leaking service line. Also, monitor your water meter before and after a period when no water is being used. If the meter changes, you likely have a leak and will need to call a professional.

5. Inspect the Water Heater

If you're only experiencing low pressure with hot water, your water heater could be the culprit. Sediment buildup in the tank can reduce water flow. Try draining and flushing the tank to remove sediment. If this doesn't work, the heater might need repairs or replacement.

6. Consider Pipe Size

If your home is older, it might have narrow pipes that can't provide adequate water flow. Although replacing pipes is a significant job, it can drastically improve water pressure.

7. Assess the Municipal Water Supply

Sometimes the issue is outside your control. If you've tried everything and still have low water pressure, contact your local water department. They can tell you if there are issues affecting water pressure in your area.

8. Install a Water Pressure Booster

If all else fails, consider installing a water pressure booster. This device pumps more water through your pipes, increasing the pressure. It's a more expensive solution, but it can effectively solve persistent water pressure problems.
