You have to start somewhere.

For years, I have wanted to start a blog; but after several attempts, I found myself overwhelmed in decisions regarding site design, blog names, finding something to write about. So I put it off and put it off, unwilling to start something that might not be sophisticated and perfect right off the bat.

I desperately need a hobby.

Once upon a time, writing was my hobby. I would sit at a computer for hours, pouring my heart and soul into words, creating diverse characters and enjoying myself. After college, where writing felt more like a burden than a pleasure, I stopped writing for fun. My writing was limited to random Facebook posts whenever my heart felt so compelled to say something about some topic, and lengthy text messages to my best friends, most of whom live around 2 hours away.

So while I was sitting at home, sick from work, earlier this week, I impulsively bought a new laptop to motivate me to start writing again. I purchased the premium plan from WordPress and my own domain, set up a rather generic design, and guilted myself into diving in. I’d already spent the money, so I had to make good use of my purchases.

So here we are.

If I am going to convince anyone that anything I write is worth reading, I guess I should start by introducing myself. I am Bess, and I am 28 years old. I grew up in a rural Ohio town, made a vow to leave and never come back after my high school graduation, moved to Columbus for college, graduated with a BA in English, vowed again to never move back home, moved back home, vowed that it was temporary, renovated my childhood home, and that is where I now reside with my amazing husband (who is currently on a venture to get Chipotle and the Pink Drink from Starbucks for me), our 6-month old son, my preteen stepdaughter, a neurotic Yorkie/chihuahua and an overzealous Goldendoodle.

One of my college professors introduced me to the term “dilettante” – (noun: a person who cultivates an area of interest, such as the arts, without real commitment or knowledge.) It is pretty fitting for me – I know quite a bit about quite a bit, but I never really find the follow-through to become really expert on any one topic. You can expect posts on books, family, TV, politics, food, skincare, music, organization, breastfeeding, mental health, fitness, fiction, parenting, and random, nonsensical rants.

I haven’t convinced you to follow my blog? That’s okay, at least I finally started it. Hopefully I can pull you in later when I get down to the nitty-gritty and write something with substance that also happens to intersect your passions and interests.

You have to start somewhere. 🙂

My family ❤
