Learn The Signs Of A Water Heater Nearing The End Of Its Lifespan

Blog

One of the worst ways to find out that your water heater is not working is by hopping in the shower only to be greeted with cold water. Unfortunately, this is a common way for people to realize that their water heater has reached the end of its lifespan. However, it does not have to be that way. Water heaters often give you signs that they may be nearing the end of their lifespan; you simply need to know what those signs are. Here are some of the signs that your water heater may provide you as it nears the end of its life.

Your Water Heater Is Struggling to Heat Water

The most common sign that a hot water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan is that the unit is struggling to heat water. You may not have as much hot water as you normally do, your water may not be getting as hot as it normally does, or you may have cold pockets of water mixed in with the hot water.

Your Hot Water Is Brown or Rust-Colored

Another sign that you may notice if your hot water heater is approaching the end of its life is brown or rust-colored water that only comes out when you use hot water. If your hot water is rust- or brown-colored, the inside of your tank is likely rusted or corroded. There is no way to fix this, and it is important to replace the water heater before the rust eats through the metal and a water leak occurs.

Your Hot Water Heater Is Loud or Noisy

The final sign that your hot water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan is that your hot water heater is loud or noisy. You may hear thuds, squealing, or grinding sounds if your tank is having a hard time heating water. In some cases, loud or noisy water tanks can be repaired, but in other cases, the tank may need to be replaced.

The average lifespan for a hot water heater is 8 to 12 years. If your tank is at or near this time frame, and you notice one or more of the above signs, your hot water tank's life may be coming to an end. A plumber can inspect your hot water heater and determine if a repair is needed or if the unit is simply old and should be replaced. This can help you avoid a scenario in which you wind up with no hot water. Reach out to a plumber who offers hot water heating services today if one or more of these signs is present to schedule an appointment to have your tank inspected.

Plumbing Has Transformed Our Lives

Think about how different your life would be without plumbing. To get water, you would have to walk outside and pull it up from a well. To use the bathroom, you would have to venture out to an outhouse, which would certainly not be pleasant in the winter. We really have to thank plumbers for the work that they do, since it allows us all to stay comfortable and do our business inside of our homes. Life has been transformed, in so many ways, by the plumbing profession. Join us in honoring plumbers by reading the articles on this website.
