Have A Major Plumbing Problem? What You Should Do

Blog

An emergency plumbing situation may consist of a leaky pipe, a backup of sewage in your home, or water coming into your home and your sump pump failing. If you have an emergency situation, it's always best to hire a professional plumber to help you with the situation. A professional is going to have the right tools, equipment, and knowledge to get a handle on the situation and get it under control to prevent further concerns that may lead to more damage to your home. If you have a major plumbing problem, read on for a few things you can also do to help.

Turn Off Your Water

If a leak is what you are dealing with, you may need to either turn off the water supply if this is where the leak is coming from, or you may have to stop using the faucet or other water supply in your home to help get a handle on the leak until you can get help with the repair. If your leak is in the water supply, shut off the valve near the supply. If you aren't sure where this is located, look beneath the sink, near a shower, or in your crawl space or basement for a shut-off depending on the water supply you are dealing with. A leak coming from a drain may require you to stop using the water supply, so the drain won't leak any longer. This goes for toilets, sinks or bathtubs/showers.

Replace The Sump Pump

If your plumbing issue is caused by a failed sump pump, you need to replace the sump pump with another one. It may not be hard-wired into your home at first, but you can run it with an extension cord until you can get a plumber to hard-wire it for you. Use a sump pump to remove as much of the water that is coming in as you can to prevent further damage to your home. You should have a backup sump pump in your home, and you should also test the sump pump often to ensure it is working properly so you aren't surprised later.

Remove A Clog

If you have a backup due to a clog, you are going to need to do what you can to remove the clog to prevent more sewage from backing up into your home. You need to remove the clog with drain clearing liquid, with a snake, or by using a plunger if possible. A backup can be a disaster, so you need to take action immediately to try and remove the clog as quickly as possible.

If you have a plumbing issue in your home and it's an emergency, you should call a professional plumber right away to help you with the situation. For more information on emergency plumbing services, contact a professional near you.

We really have to thank plumbers for the work that they do, since it allows us all to stay comfortable and do our business inside of our homes. Life has been transformed, in so many ways, by the plumbing profession. Join us in honoring plumbers by reading the articles on this website.
